5 Most Common Swimming Pool Pump Problems
As a key factor in keeping water clean and safe, swimming pool pumps do a great job. When all goes well, you might not think about your pool pump again. However, a malfunctioning pump could make your pool redundant.
These are the five most common pool pump problems you should be aware of and how to deal with them.
1. The pump is leaking
Components such as impeller housing "O" rings, thread sealants, and shaft seals can degrade over time, leading to leaks. Because water can enter through the tiniest of crevices, even a small seal breach can cause a leak. Regularly check and replace seals for peace of mind.
2. The pump makes a lot of noise.
A rattling sound from the pump indicates that the unit is not properly seated in its base. Make sure the pump is in the correct position, if the problem persists try placing it on a rubber pad to stop the noise.
Cavitation is a problem that occurs when the pump is running without water. The pump impeller is spinning too fast, pushing air molecules out of the water, and creating a popping sound. Check for a clogged filter or impeller and make sure the pump is properly sized.
Bearing wear is inevitable and will happen to any well-used pool pump.
3. The pump does not pump water
If your pump is not sucking water, check the skimmer, pump basket, and filter for debris buildup.
Pump impellers are also prone to clogging occasionally, so it's worth checking.
Another cause could be an air leak in the suction line. Air has less mass than water, so if the air is present, the pump will pull it in before pumping it.
4. The motor does not start or shut down
Make sure the motor is powered up before diving into it. Once you've confirmed this, listen for a hum or click from the motor. If the motor is humming without starting, it could be a capacitor problem.
A motor that starts up but quickly shuts itself off can overheat, which can happen when the motor doesn't match the pump it's driving. Overheating can also indicate a problem with the fan, or that the vents are clogged with dust, leaves, and other debris. Keep the vents clear and make sure there is enough space around the motor for optimum performance.
5. Motor/pump sucks air
Large air leaks in the pool pump can cause circulation problems and make it difficult to keep the pump on.
Air leaks originate before the impeller for reasons including:
Poor thread seal of the pipe entering the pump
Stem leakage on the suction valve
Pipe rupture
Improper pump cover or pump cover "O" ring
A loose drain plug.
Test for air leaks by applying shaving foam to the suction side fitting and fittings while the pump is running. The pump will try to draw foam into the pipe because it has less resistance or mass than water.
If there is an air leak, you will start to see layers of foam as the foam is drawn into the system, showing parts that need repair or replacement.
