Time to Clean the Sand Filter/Cartridge Filter
Like your pool pump, your filtration system is an important part of maintaining water clarity. Time to clean your sand filter/cartridge. It might sound difficult, but there's no getting around it by having a swimming pool. So by following this guide, we want to make it as easy as possible.
The most common pool filters are sand filters and cartridge filters. Both have their own benefits, so it really comes down to personal choice and preference.
Sand filters are usually filled with filter sand (such as zeolite or diamond) or glass media. They filter water by pushing it down through your filter media, removing all impurities such as dust, grime, and oil. Then return the clean water to your pool. Over time, the filter becomes clogged and needs to be cleaned. The process of cleaning sand filters is often called backwashing.
Most sand filters on the market have 6 different valve positions. Filter, flush, backwash, recirculate, flush, and shut off.
Filter - normal filter position. The suction comes from the pool, the water is pushed through the filter, gets cleaned, and returns clean water to your pool.
Backwash - Cleans the filter by reversing the flow of water and draining the water from the waste pipe.
Rinse - Used to flush dirt from valves after backwashing. Also, re-compact your filter media.
Waste - Bypass filter, used for vacuuming or lowering the water level
Recirculation - returns water to your pool without filtration
OFF - Shuts off all flow to the filter or pool
Now that the basics are covered it's time to clean your sand filter. Just follow this step-by-step guide:
1. Turn off your pump
2. Press the MPV (Multiport Valve) handle and rotate it to backwash
3. Turn the pump and backflush system back on until the sight glass is clear (approximately 2 minutes)
4. Turn off your pump
5. Press the MPV handle and rotate it to flush
6. Turn the pump back on and flush the system until the sight glass is clear (approximately 0.5-1 minute)
7. Turn off your pump
8. Press the MPV handle and rotate backward to filter and resume normal operation.
Make sure the handle locks into each position properly.
Cartridge filtration is an effective and trouble-free method of filtration. Pool water enters the filter and passes through the polyester single-element cartridge. Airborne particles are captured and the water is returned to the pool. As the buildup of dirt in the element increases, the water pressure increases and the flow rate decreases. When pressure gauges reach unacceptable levels, elements must be removed and cleaned
Cleaning Process:
1. Turn off your pump
2. Unscrew and remove the bleed valve
3. Unscrew the locking ring and remove your filter element
4. Stand up the element and start cleaning the filter. Use a garden hose and nozzle.
5. Rotate the ink cartridge and clean it from top to bottom. We repeat this process twice
6. Cartridges may need to be soaked in descaler/descaler.
Reassembly Process:
1. Reinstall the filter element
2. Make sure the o-rings are clean, lubricated, and seated properly in the grooves before firmly reattaching the cartridge cap
3. Tighten the locking ring. Be careful not to overtighten
4. Unscrew the bleed valve and turn back slightly
5. Make sure to start your pool pump if necessary
6. Turn the pump back on
7. When all the air has been expelled from the system, close the bleed valve
In the end, the biggest question we get is how often should I clean my filtration system. Most of the time you will monitor the system pressure gauge and clean the system when the pressure starts to rise. In our experience, getting into the habit of cleaning your filter system every 4-6 weeks is a good practice.
